For the past 46 days, government employees at Shaheed Minar Maidan in Dharmatalla, Kolkata have been staging a sit-in protest demanding Dearness Allowance (DA). However, there have been reports of threats made towards the protesters, with a poster being found on the picket stage warning that the platform will be blown up with bombs if the protest continues.
A formal complaint has been lodged on behalf of the employees at the Maidan police station regarding this matter. Recently, Firhad Hakim, the Mayor of Kolkata and a cabinet minister in Mamta's government, referred to the workers' strike as a "drama".
Despite the workers meeting with the governor on Sunday and being urged to end the protest, they have made it clear that they will continue the strike until the state government agrees to pay the dearness allowance.
Hakim's labeling of the movement as a "drama" has caused controversy and is seen by some as an attempt to delegitimize the protesters. Additionally, the poster threatening to bomb the picket stage has raised concerns of intimidation tactics being used to end the protest. The situation remains tense as the employees continue their demand for fair compensation.
